Far above Earth, on the exterior of the International Space Station, scientists tested something beautifully simple: moss.

For nine months, samples of moss were strapped to the outside panels of the ISS — fully exposed to the vacuum of space, brutal temperature swings, and intense cosmic radiation. Conditions that would destroy most living organisms within minutes.

But moss?
It did something extraordinary.

Deprived of water, it slipped into a dormant state, shutting down its biological activity almost entirely. In this “paused” mode, its cells became incredibly resistant — able to withstand radiation that normally shreds DNA, and temperatures that swing between scorching heat and freezing cold.

When the samples were brought back to Earth and touched with water again, something miraculous happened.

They woke up.
