Описание к видео What’s This Glass Bell You See in Summertime Japan?

The little bells called 風鈴 furin are always seen in Japanese anime and movies during scenes related to summer. What are those for?

The original furin (wind chimes) were bronze bells used for fortune-telling in ancient China, which were introduced to Japan along with Buddhism.

At that time in Japan, strong winds were thought to bring epidemics and evil spirits, so people believed that the area within hearing distance of this bell was a sanctuary. Even today, small bells may be found hanging at the four corners of a temple.

Furin, which was long a culture for aristocrats, became accessible to the commoners during the Edo period (1603-1868), when the culture of glass was introduced to Japan. They were often hung on the porch, especially during the summer months when disease was more prevalent in the homes.

Furthermore, around autumn, Japanese people had a culture of enjoying the sound of bell bugs, so they would put the furin away. This led to the development of the culture of furin being associated with summer.
