Myōkō was named after Mount Myōkō in Chūbu region. She participated in the invasion of Southern Phillipine Islands, December 1941. She was engaged in several other Naval Battles, Battle of the Java Sea, Coral Sea & Midway (1942), Solomon Islands campaign (1942), Phillipine Sea & Leyte Gulf (1944). She was hit by a torpedo during Battle of Leyte Gulf and towed to Singapore for repairs. February 1945, Myōkō could not be repaired in Singapore due to insufficient materials. Harbor commander suggested that Myōkō remain in Singapore as a floating anti-aircraft battery. She survived the war & surrendered to British Royal Navy on 21 September 1945 then towed to Port Swettenham (Port Klang), Malaya and scuttled on July 8, 1946.
