This Mix is available to BUY NOW from Barrys Bandcamp: https://barrybeatsakasispex.bandcamp....

Inspired by the lockdown phenomena of live streamed DJ sets, everyones favourite Cornish beat making uncle decided he would have a crack at it. And in traditional Barry style, he didn't make it easy for himself! Not content with just rockin' the ones and twos, Barry decided to take to the threes and fours as well, utilising the latest state of the art cloning technology. Well a split screen at least!

Barry has been an avid Serato user for over 15 years, holding it down every weekend at his local Royal legion clubhouse. Despite his rather limited scratching abilities he has fully embraced the wide array of looping, triggering and DJ effects available within the software. And when he acquired the Pioneer S9 mixer a few years back he really started to go to town. In fact, Barry would often find himself practically creating 'on the fly' Hip Hop beats using the looping and triggering facilities of Serato, much to the bewilderment of many of the Redruth Royal Legion patrons.

It is these techniques that Barry wanted to showcase in this mix. As you can hear, there are many sections of Barrys Ultimate Back 2 Back Break mix where he manages to disassemble the old dusty music being played and chop it up, often over a looped up drum break, in effect creating a faux LIVE Hip-Hop beat.

But as well as live Break chopping and looping Barry also wanted to return to his Cut & Paste roots with this musical adventure. As a teenager a very young Barry would learn his chops doing cut and paste mixes using a Tascam porta 05 4 track tape cassette recorder and later a Korg DSS 1 sampler.

Zoom forward to 2003 and Fly like a seagull is released on illicit records followed by 2017s Star Wars vs Hip-Hop musical collision, Def Star Throwdown. This mix serves as the final part in Barrys/Si's Cut & Paste trilogy, and to set it apart from the other 2 cut and pastes this one is performed LIVE Twice!!!

Putting this mix together and performing it live was no mean feat and took Barry months of meticulous planning. First there was the selecting of super obscure weird and wonderful breaks and beats. Then the ripping of the audio from the vinyl into Ableton. In actuality Barry accumulated and digitised over 80 tracks as he wanted plenty of musical options to choose from. Then and only then, with all these nuggets imported into Serato the real fun part of putting it all together into a seamless mix could begin.

If you pay close attention you can see that the Left hand Barry takes care of the main musical elements of the mix while Right hand Barry handles all the spoken word, sound effects and additional musical layers.
In practise there was around 6 weeks between the 2 recordings. Once the first LH mix was nailed Barry had to plan out and practise the second ‘overdub’ mix. Finding spoken word and scratches that all flow and work together is quite a challenge.

Luckily, where this project differed greatly from previous Barry vids as this was ALL in the planning and practising.
Once the 2 final mix takes were in the bag the editing was a total breeze as it was just a case of split screening it and syncing the 2 mixes together!

So there you have it. A little glimpse and background into how this Ultimate Back 2 Back Break mix came about. Barry very much hopes you enjoyed it.
