Talk Abstracts:

Talk 1: Market Design with Blockchain Technology - Andreas Park

Blockchain technology creates distributed digital records of transactions and enables dis-intermediated financial transfers. The visibility of these records and users ability to infer information from them are critical system design choices. We examine how these choices influence traders economic incentives, trading behavior, trading costs, and investor welfare, in a theoretical model of investor-to-investor trading. Full transparency yields the highest welfare, by construction. Privacy of holdings obtains either by restricting the records visibility or by assigning numerous identifiers per investor. The latter solution, native to public blockchains, yields higher welfare than the traditionally limited visibility, despite the higher risk of front-running.

Talk 2: blockchain.lab.yorku.ca - Henry Kim

Many in the business world are hailing the blockchain as the next big technological innovation. Don Tapscott, for example, states that blockchain is core to the evolution from the Internet of information to the Internet of Value. Fortuitously, key blockchain pioneers like Tapscott and Vitalik Buterin, the principal developer of Ethereum, hail from Toronto. As a result, there is an internationally-recognized, thriving blockchain ecosystem in Toronto to which blockchain.lab.yorku.ca contributes. In this talk, we will describe some of our initiatives that leverage the resources that are uniquely available at a university to make a unique contribution to the blockchain ecosystem in Canada and internationally. We will discuss initiatives such as our collaboration with the UN on blockchain for shipping, collaboration with the Toronto Regional Conservation Authority on a blockchain for a sustainable electricity micro-grid, a collaboration with a prominent blockchain startup on using deep learning for a blockchain consensus mechanism, and our blockchain development course for management students.
