I spent the day hiking to Gee Creek Falls in Tennessee, and it couldn’t have been a more perfect early October hike.
I actually first attempted this hike solo a while back, but today I came back with my hiking buddy Kyle. Gee Creek Falls is one of those hidden waterfalls in Tennessee that’s not crowded and easy enough for most people to enjoy. It’s located in the Gee Creek Wilderness Area, part of the Cherokee National Forest, near the small mountain town of Reliance, Tennessee.
The Gee Creek Falls Trail is one of the best easy hikes in East Tennessee for beginners or anyone wanting a short adventure with a great waterfall at the end. The trail is roughly 1.9 miles round trip, making it an ideal waterfall hike for a quick day trip. The hike starts at the Gee Creek Campground, which is a great place to stay if you want to spend the night surrounded by the sounds of the creek and the forest. The trail follows small cascades before reaching the main waterfall. The trail is rocky in a few spots, but nothing too difficult—it’s definitely one of those short waterfall hikes in Tennessee that’s easy enough to bring friends or family along.
The falls drop around 25 feet into a small pool surrounded by ferns, boulders, and tall trees that were just beginning to show their autumn colors.
When hiking the trail, look for old structures used in the 1890's when the area was used for mining quartz.
I love visiting places like this in October, because the fall foliage in Tennessee is just beginning to show, and the temperatures are perfect for hiking—cool in the morning and warm by afternoon.
One of my favorite things about Cherokee National Forest is how peaceful it feels. It’s one of the most underrated spots for hiking in the South, and Gee Creek Falls is a great example of why.
The area offers everything from easy hiking trails to more challenging wilderness routes, plus opportunities for camping, kayaking, and fishing.
For anyone who loves hiking to waterfalls but doesn’t want a long or strenuous trek, Gee Creek Falls Trail is the perfect option. It’s a great introduction to solo hiking in Tennessee, too—since it’s short, well-marked, and follows the creek most of the way.
