In this video, archaeologist Dr. Ed Barnhart—founder of the Maya Exploration Center and a specialist in the ancient civilizations of the Americas —dives deep into the world of the Nazca. Everyone’s heard of the famous Nazca Lines, but who were the people behind them?

Dr. Barnhart takes you on a journey from their origins as the Paracas culture on the Peruvian coast, through their migration inland to the Nazca Valley, and into their golden age as master engineers and artists. You’ll learn about their incredible underground aqueduct system (the *puquios*), their ritual practices involving severed heads and elongated skulls, and the true, human story behind the creation of the massive geoglyphs.

He also explores the leading theory for why the lines were made—not for aliens, but as part of a grand, communal ritual tied to feasting and festivals at the nearby ceremonial center of Cahuachi. Finally, discover what led to the Nazca’s decline at the hands of the Wari Empire and how their modern descendants are facing a water crisis eerily similar to that of their ancestors.

*This is the full story of the Nazca—far beyond the lines.*
