Well no periods until 18 years? 18 years is quite late for any lady to get her periods. See normally a girl gets her periods in adolescence usually 12 years, 11 years later. So most of the girls they mature and they start having their periods at around 14-15 years. So coming to 18 years it is quite elderly age till which it should have definitely happened menstruation. So if menstruation doesn't happen we have to always analyze there may be so many causes for that. Everything may be inside, everything may be all right. But even then there may be blockage of the blood coming out because there is some block in the vagina because of some physical presence of some at the same there. So that because of which she will not have her periods. So one more thing is the cause of this menstruation there is so many things. See it is coming from the pituitary, hypothalamus and that will go and act on the ovaries and that ovaries hormones will act on the uterus then it will change the uterus in such a way then it will notice a monthly bleeding for the girls. So if there is any problem in all these things right from the pituitary hypothalamus etc, there may be reason for not getting the period still 18 years. And one more thing is what is very common nowadays is thyroid problems. Either may be hypothyroid or hyperthyroid. These also may be reasons for the girl not getting her periods till 18 years. So what is the thing you have to do is first most important thing is if a girl has not attend her menarche even at 18 years you better meet your gynecologists so that they'll investigate. The simplest investigation that we can do is as gynecologists we'll try to check her up physically then we will see her all her secondary sexual characters whether she has developed her breasts whether she has developed her sexual area hair that is hair in the axilla, hair in the pubic region and all these things we see. There is some type of contour that the abdomen will have and just the lower part of the abdomen you have which shows that she is maturing normally so these are the things which are externally seen. But other than that we don't know internally what has happened. So what we would like to tell you is we'll usually send you for an ultrasound scan. In ultrasound scan we'll know about the internal sexual organs. Main thing is the uterus and the ovaries. If the uterus and ovaries are normally seen then we expect that she may menstruate and they will go forward depending on the findings that we get from the ultrasound etc.
