Japanese doll to ward off bad weather. Let me explain a little bit more.
In Japanese folklore a teru teru bōzu (てるてる坊主) is a very popular talisman.

Its name literally means "shine shine monk" and is considered capable of warding off bad weather and stopping the rain.
It is usually done by hand using cotton or more simply paper tissues.

Tradition has it that it must be hung outside the window the day before which the good weather is desired.
Teru teru bōzu become popular in Japan during the Edo period and nowadays is still used by children to ward off bad weather before a picnic or school trip.
Often a song is sung while the teru teru bozu is being hung.

In the old days, if the weather turned out well, they were washed away in the river but nowadays, this practice is not used anymore to prevent littering.

It is fun to know the fact that, if hung upside down, this talisman acts as a prayer for the rain.

Have you ever made a teru teru bōzu (てるてる坊主)?
