Iranian arrested over London terror plot was asylum seeker living in taxpayer funded home
An Iranian man arrested in connection with an alleged plot to attack the Israeli embassy in London was reportedly living in taxpayer-funded asylum accommodation, according to recent reports. The 40-year-old suspect was detained in Rochdale during coordinated counter-terrorism raids across the UK on 3 May 2025. He is believed to have arrived in Britain via a small boat crossing the Channel before claiming asylum.
The Metropolitan Police arrested five men, including four Iranian nationals, under the Terrorism Act on suspicion of preparing a terrorist act. The arrests were part of a major operation involving armed officers and special forces, described by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper as one of the most significant in recent years.
The suspect's accommodation was managed by Serco, a government contractor responsible for housing asylum seekers on behalf of the Home Office. Neighbours reported that the man had been living at the property for over six months with minimal interaction.
Authorities are investigating potential links between the suspects and Iranian state-backed groups. Iran's foreign minister has categorically denied any involvement, suggesting the allegations may be politically motivated.
