The recommendation is that if you're already managing your files and emails in Microsoft 365, you’ve already got access to excellent data protection and governance tools.

Jason explains how Microsoft Purview brings you a suite of compliance tools, covering things like classification, data protection, Data Loss Prevention, lifecycle management, and insider risk management. The Microsoft 365 E3 licence level gives you access to the core Purview tools, and the E5 licence level gives you access to the more advanced tools, with automation, etc.

Microsoft Priva is another tool, priced as an add-on. Microsoft Priva gives you more specialised tools for identifying and managing privacy risks, and for processing Data Subject Access Requests (DSARs).
