Sunni Perspective on Khilafat:
Sunni Muslims believe that the Prophet Muhammad SAWW did not explicitly designate a successor. Instead, they hold that the leadership of the Muslim community (the Caliphate) should be determined through a process of consensus or election by the community's most prominent figures. They consider the first four caliphs "Abu Bakr, Umar, Usman, and Ali" as the "Rightly Guided Caliphs" who were chosen by the community and led according to the Sunnah (the Prophet's traditions and practices). For Sunnis, a Caliph is primarily a political and administrative leader, though also a religious guide, whose authority is derived from the community's acceptance.

Shia Perspective on Imaamat:
Shia Muslims, conversely, believe that the leadership of the Muslim community (the Imamat) is a divinely appointed position, passed down through the Prophet Muhammad's family, specifically through his son-in-law and cousin, Ali ibn Abi Talib, and his descendants. They hold that the Prophet explicitly designated Ali as his successor at Ghadeer e Khumm. For Shias, an Imam is not merely a political leader but also a spiritual guide who possesses infallible knowledge and authority, essential for interpreting religious law and guiding humanity. The Imams are seen as direct inheritors of the Prophet's spiritual authority.

The Disagreement:
This core difference in understanding leadership led to the initial schism in Islam. Sunnis emphasize the community's role in choosing a leader, while Shias emphasize divine appointment and the spiritual authority of the Imams from the Prophet's lineage. This has led to distinct theological, jurisprudential, and historical narratives within each sect.
