On the night of Sunday 22nd September 2019 Thomas Cook Group entered administration with their UK Airline ceasing operations with immediate effect. This video looks at some of my favourite photos and videos of the Thomas Cook Airlines UK fleet in action in happier times at both Manchester and Skiathos Airports.

The Thomas Cook Group has 4 airlines in its fold, Thomas Cook Airlines UK, Scandinavia and Balearics as well as the German charter carrier Condor.

Formed through the merger of several airlines over the course of a number of years Thomas Cook Airlines UK began through the merger of Airworld and Flying Colours Airlines, Airworld was the in-house airline of Thomas Cook but merged into the larger and more established Flying Colours. Flying Colours would itself merge with Caledonian (whose history goes back to BEA Airtours in 1969) in the year 2000 and be rebranded as JMC Air Services. In 2003 JMC Air was rebranded as Thomas Cook Airlines.

This wasn't the end though, in 2007 the parent company Thomas Cook AG merged with the MyTravel Group with their airlines merging in 2008. MyTravel Airways was formerly Airtours International formed in 1991, Airtours acquired Inter European Airways in 1993. Airtours also acquired the Scandinavian airline Premiair in 1994 which had been formed via the merger of Scanair and Conair.

Thomas Cook's history goes right back to 1841, founded by Thomas Cook to carry temperance supporters by railway between the cities of Leicester, Nottingham, Derby and Birmingham. It has been a well known brand name and staple of the British High Street and will be sorely missed.

Airline bankruptcy is a horrible experience for all involved, especially the crews (both air and ground) and it may take weeks or even a few months to recover from the shock. I hope all of the staff pick themselves up, dust themselves off and find another airline to call home.
