Zounds! Online Productions was founded on the principles of creating joy and laughter out of the most uncertain of times. Created in April 2020, founder BJ Grip was faced with a lack of creative space due to the global pandemic that put the entire theater community in limbo. After being inspired by similar works over video conferencing, BJ reached out to actors and artists that he had worked with across Southern California to see if they’d be interested in doing staged readings of William Shakespeare’s Star Wars, written by Ian Doescher. The answer from everyone was a resounding yes, and that excitement and passion has carried the readings ever since.

Zounds! Online Productions completed its sixth reading, finishing the original Star Wars trilogy as interpreted by Mr. Doescher. Each Episode has been split into two parts for brevity in the video streams, with Part 1 consisting of Acts I-III and Part 2 finishing with Acts IV-V. After beginning with a straightforward read for Verily, a New Hope, a drinking game component was added from The Empire Striketh Back, which will continue to be a defining feature of the readings moving forward to engage with the audience during the production.

After the conclusion of The Jedi Doth Return, Zounds! will be continuing to bring the works of Mr. Doescher to their audience with a reading of Much Ado About Mean Girls, a Shakespearean take on the oft-quoted classic. From there, the company will move on to the prequel trilogy of Star Wars and beyond into original works in the coming months written by company members.
