Without a doubt, one of the most pregnant things a doctor has to do is to break the bad news to somebody that they have a terminal illness, typically cancer. Bruce has had to do this hundreds of times, then walk the journey with the patient, their partner and their family until they die. It is a difficult time, deeply intimate and personal, and something which he now feels honoured to be part of. He has learnt to do it in ways that patients and the relatives have stated the best ways to do it, but unfortunately many doctors still undertake this task using strategies that are either unhelpful or even hurtful.

This moment when the news is broken is the beginning of a long journey of grief. So the way that the person is told the news isreally important, because 'grief handled badly can make people better but grief handled well can make people better’.

This video discusses how Bruce, as a Christian doctor undertakes this task and also how he understands the role of carers in helping sufferers and their loved ones along this journey
