Advocates for the rights of youth visited the Utah Senate Judiciary, Law Enforcement, and Criminal Justice Committee to testify in support of SB0297, a bill that would finally create state oversight for Utah's notorious Troubled Teen Industry. This wide network of abusive "tough-love" boarding schools, residential treatment centers, bootcamps and wilderness programs has been operating with very little oversight in the state of Utah for many decades. Utah is home to over 100 Troubled Teen Industry programs - that's 36% of TTI programs in the nation. 11:11 Media's Caroline Cole testified in support of the bill, along with multiple parents whose children passed away in Utah RTC's. The testimony from these grieving parents was especially devastating.

The people in green ribbons are against oversight that would keep children safe from abuse, neglect, sexual assault and death in treatment programs. Somehow, they call this "mental health awareness" - very shady/manipulative.

SB0297 passed the committee unanimously, a big win for youth rights in a state which is infamous - and appealing to abusers - for its very few existing protections.
