The long debated question of how much music theory do you need for music production is finally answered. None. There are lots of artists like The Beatles, Marley and Deadmau5 that never formally studied music theory and still made it big. It’s easy to point at them and say, well they didn’t need any music theory so neither do I!

HOW DID THEY GET BIG?

First of all, as far as making it in the music industry, there are too many variables involved to say definitively what propels some artists to fame and others, well, not so much.

Most of those artists are far more adept at music theory than you might imagine. Just because they may not have formally studied music theory doesn’t mean that they are completely ignorant of it. In music, pattern recognition is half the game.

YOU DON’T NEED MUSIC THEORY

Do you need to know music theory or piano to make electronic music? The truth is, no, you do not.
You do not need to train to play a game of football. You do not need to train to run a road race. But if you want to stand out from the crowd you want to have some kind of advantage or at least minimise your liabilities. Wilful ignorance is definitely a liability. This is true in anything you do. Just like how we know from experience that training and practice of anything makes you better at it.

The more tracks you produce the better you’ll get at it. You’ll develop a nice workflow and crank out song after song, each one a little better than the one before.

MUSIC THEORY & CREATIVITY

Then you might start to notice that your songs might start sounding a little samey. Many producers think the solution is another plug in or sample pack. It isn’t. That’s a short term fix. A band aid. This is one of the things that music theory helps to fix.

Instead of stifling creativity, music theory gives you new options and opens up new creative pathways and possibilities.

COLLABORATION

It allows you to effectively collaborate with other producers and musicians because music theory is the language we speak.

So if you intend to work exclusively on your own forever then you may be less motivated to learn any theory right now.

ARTISTIC DEVELOPMENT

But if you’re under the age of thirty there is something you should be aware of and strongly consider. Your musical tastes will continue to develop and mature. There will come a point when you will want to truly express yourself as an artist.

Music theory is A TOOL that allows for freedom of artistic expression.
