In job costing, the costs are tracked and assigned to specific jobs or projects rather than being averaged out across all products or services. The key steps in job costing include:

Identifying the Job: Each unique project or job is identified and assigned a distinct job or project number.

Accumulating Direct Costs: Direct costs, which can be easily traced to a specific job, are directly assigned to that job. This includes direct materials, direct labor, and other direct expenses related to the specific job.

Allocating Indirect Costs: Indirect costs, also known as overhead costs, are those that cannot be easily traced to a specific job. Instead, these costs are allocated to jobs based on a predetermined allocation method, such as machine hours, labor hours, or square footage.

Calculating Total Job Cost: The total cost of each job is calculated by summing up the direct costs and allocated indirect costs.

Assigning Costs to Units: If the job involves producing multiple units of a product, the total job cost is divided by the number of units to determine the cost per unit.

Job costing provides businesses with a detailed understanding of the costs associated with each specific job or project, allowing for more accurate pricing, cost control, and decision-making. This method is particularly useful when dealing with diverse and unique projects, where costs can vary significantly from one job to another.
