Exactly 50 years ago today, India witnessed one of its most controversial periods: The Emergency. Why did Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declare this state of internal emergency, plunging the nation into a constitutional crisis?

The trigger was the Allahabad High Court's verdict in 1975, which found Indira Gandhi guilty of electoral malpractice in the 1971 election and subsequently nullified her victory. This ruling sparked widespread outrage and led to large-scale protests across the country, notably under the leadership of veteran politician Jayaprakash Narayan.

Under immense pressure, Indira Gandhi declared an "internal emergency" on June 25, 1975, citing a threat to national security, under Article 352 of the Constitution.

The period that followed was marked by controversial and drastic measures:

Prominent opposition leaders, including Morarji Desai and L.K. Advani, were immediately arrested and jailed.
A highly controversial family planning program was implemented, which saw approximately 1 crore 10 lakh (11 million) forced sterilizations.
Massive slum demolitions were carried out in cities under the guise of "beautification," displacing huge populations. In Delhi alone, around 7 lakh (700,000) people were removed from their homes.
The Emergency finally concluded in March 1977, when Indira Gandhi called for general elections. In a historic outcome, she suffered a significant defeat, marking the end of one of the darkest chapters in Indian democracy. This period remains a critical lesson in the fragility of democratic institutions and the importance of civil liberties.
