Kai has more than two and a half decades of experience in the Canadian investment industry, beginning his career as an associate analyst for CIBC World Markets before moving to Gluskin Sheff + Associates, where he was managing director and portfolio manager. He joined JCIC in 2017, broadening the firm’s focus toward international equities and expanding the firm’s asset allocation capabilities.

In his role as CIO, Kai takes an objective and methodical approach, with an understanding that there’s always more to learn when looking for investment opportunities. Kai is continuously focused on finding new companies to invest in, and ways to improve performance.

Kai graduated from Queen’s University with a B. Comm (Hons.) with first-class honours, and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) charter holder. He is also a Certified Financial Planner (CFP). He enjoys travelling, golfing and is an automotive enthusiast.

We look at the global equity market cap, it's easy to relate to all the Canadian companies. This is our country, but Canada makes up less than 3% of the market globally. And then of course the US is also the next natural market. That one is about 65% of the world and we can also relate to that and its source of a lot of great companies. There's also another 30% though, a little over 30% in the international markets. And that includes Europe, Japan, Australia, China. And that's where we find other opportunities. Most of the firms that are boutique size like us only look at Canada, the US but we look globally. And what we do find is sometimes valuations are more attractive in other markets, sometimes their economies in a different phase and might be more attractive too. But there's also a source of companies that just, you can't duplicate here. And so we don't want to limit our opportunities from a geographic standpoint. So we'll look everywhere.
