The National Benchmark Test Project is a national initiative run by Universities South Africa (USAf) and was implemented in 2008. Some universities use the NBTs in addition to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) for access to higher education, while others use the tests to determine the kind of learning support a student will need during their studies. But in a nutshell, the National Benchmark Test NBT is a set of tests used to assess a student’s knowledge and skill in an effort to measure academic readiness for university.

They comprise of three multiple choice tests, written as a combined Academic Literacy and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) test, and a separate Mathematics test. Both the AQL and MAT test are 3 hours long.
