The Atlanta Police Department is a family. When things get tough, we all have each other’s backs.

Investigator Mason Mercure experienced that truth firsthand when a suspect shot him during an arrest on August 27, 2024. In those critical moments, it was the quick, decisive actions of his fellow Investigator, Scott Berhalter, and Henry County Police Officer Justin Pena, that saved his life.

Their courage, training, and selfless response remind us what it truly means to wear the badge to protect not only the community, but also one another.
We honored their bravery at this years Crime is Toast breakfast by giving Investigator Mercure the Purple Heart, Investigator Berhalter the Medal of Honor, and Henry County Police Officer Justin Pena received a special Department Commendation.
