In this episode, my son and I embarked on a rare, private tour of the mysterious Irbene Radio Telescope, a hidden gem in the dense forests of Latvia and a relic of the Cold War era. Known as one of the Soviet Union's secret listening stations, this abandoned spy station once played a crucial role in intercepting signals from the West. Now, it stands as a fascinating mix of history, mystery, and cutting-edge science.

Led by a knowledgeable guide, we explored the massive radio dishes, learning about their former military use and the powerful secrets they once held. The guide shared stories of how these antennas monitored NATO communications and why, after the Soviet Union’s collapse, many of the dishes were damaged, dismantled, or left to decay. But this story doesn’t end with the past. Today, some of the antennas have been restored and are even operational, now serving as tools for scientific research and international astronomy projects.

Together, we ventured through the old control rooms and eerie, disused structures, standing in the shadows of the Cold War.
