Of all the subgenres of metal, stoner doom is the most direct descendant of Black Sabbath: therefore it is both the oldest form of metal and, in some ways, one of the most modern.
Acid King, the brainchild of Lori Steinburg, formed in 1993 in San Francisco.
Their debut, 1995's "Zoroaster", was a mix of classic rock and stoner doom (worth listening to).
The sequel, 1999's "Busse Woods," took the doom elements of the debut and brought them to the fore.
After a period of silence, in 2005 they released this "III", a beautiful album of thick and acid stoner doom, rotten at the root, stoner rock in the purest and sickest sense of the genre, a record that exudes hallucinogenic substances and related nightmares and above all it reveals itself in very long rides with dirty and malignant riffs, ultra-low tones, suffocating repetitions and dark monolithic structures.
"III" is a lysergic journey into darkness and desolation (without light to guide you or joy to support you) it is not an album from which to extrapolate more or less significant songs, the rhythm is constantly slow with sudden psych-fuzz explosions, not time is wasted with solos in order not to interrupt the feeling of suffocation, but equally a dreamy and almost magical feeling is perceived that leads to remain glued to the record until the end: a musical experience to be accepted or rejected as a whole.
"III" solidifies the psych doom glory of Lori Steinburg and associates (Guy Pinhas and Joey Osbourne, fundamental experiences in The Obsessed, Goatsnake and Altamont).
An evil triangle that produces fiery and ultra-distorted jets, dark and psychedelic stoner doom, played on the fat riffs and the evocative voice of Lori, authentic protagonist of the work.
But the impact of Guy Pinhas and Joey Osbourne is not to be underestimated at all, on the contrary: the rhythmic mixture of Acid King is fundamental.
Slow and penetrating, it sticks in the body and spirit and makes you travel on tracks saturated with electricity and mystical spiritual research: "War of the mind" proves it in its twelve minutes, where stoner, doom and sludge find a truly incredible balance .
In the same vein "Heavy load" and "On to everafter" also move, exasperated slowness put at the service of a fully stoner attitude, for power (pachydermic guitars and a mammoth style) and atmospheres (smoky enough).
"2 Wheel nation", "Bad vision" and "Into the ground" instead explore new melodic paths, surprising and unexpected: the heavy psychedelic blanket is in fact torn by painful harmonies, dark, nocturnal, but still persuasive.
A voice that seems to come from beyond the grave, an afterlife that is certainly not evil, definitely bewitching ... in short, the Acid King are not joking and are the best you can ask for in the combination of psycho stoner and doom.
