The Bermuda Race has run biennially since 1906—and from Newport, R.I., since the late 1930s. Its premise, that “amateurs in small boats can make adventurous use of the seas” still holds true more than 100 years later. In this introduction to the race, 2020 Race Chairman Jay Gowell talks about the history of the race and how it is now seven races in one, for different types of boats and crews of different competitive intensity levels. The common denominator? You arrive in the tropical paradise of Bermuda, a fitting reward for several days of racing in the ocean.
