Delayed release: The film was completed in 2000, but its initial distributor, Universal, refused to release it due to fears of an NC-17 rating. It was later picked up and released by Lionsgate in 2003.

Marx Brothers inspiration: The names of many characters, including Captain Spaulding, Otis B. Driftwood, and Rufus T. Firefly, were inspired by characters from Marx Brothers comedies.

Filmed at home: Some of the most disturbing cutaway scenes, like Otis torturing cheerleaders and Baby playing with a skeleton, were filmed by Rob Zombie in his own basement with a 16mm camera after production wrapped.

Used real movie history: The Firefly family's house is located on the Universal Studios backlot and was previously used in the 1982 Dolly Parton film, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
