The Silvertown Tunnel opened on Monday 7th April 2025 next door to its older sibling the Blackwall Tunnel. The differnece now is that you have to pay a toll to use both tunnels.

Will this have an adverse affect on the use of the tunnels, will it put additional strain on the already heavily congested local roads?

Will the opening of the Silvertown Tunnel alleviate traffic congestion in the area or will it be a white elephant due to the high daily usage charges?

The opening of the tunnel coincided with the schools easter holidays, a time when traffic is generally lighter due to people taking the opportunity to get away for the first Bank holiday of the year.

Only time will tell if the opening of this new river crossing will do anything to ease traffic congestion or will the introduction of charges push the congestion onto local roads as commuters seek to find alternative free routes?
