US President Donald Trump has threatened legal action against the BBC for its editing of a speech he made in 2021 on the day his supporters overran the Capitol, which the British broadcaster admitted on Monday was an "error of judgment".

The programme – produced by a third party – spliced together remarks delivered nearly an hour apart, omitting Mr Trump’s call for peaceful protest, creating the impression he urged violence.

In the letter sent on Sunday and seen by Reuters, the president's lawyers said the BBC must retract its documentary by Friday or face a lawsuit for "no less" than US$1 billion.

BBC chairman Samir Shah on Monday apologised for the editing of the footage.

BBC's director general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness have resigned after the crisis.

The BBC's outgoing boss said the broadcaster has made some mistakes, but added that it must "fight" for its journalism.

Britain's government rallied to the defense of the BBC.

However, the British public reacted with disappointment.
