How many times have you talked yourself out of applying for a job because you didn’t meet all the requirements?

Even if you only have a few recent projects or feel like you're still refining your skills, sometimes it’s worth going for it anyway. You might be farther along than you think!

That’s exactly what Alyssa DeTillio did. While transitioning into instructional design, she came across a great opportunity at the company she was already working for. It aligned perfectly with her career goals, but she wasn’t entirely sure that she was qualified.

Still, she knew she’d been putting in the work—applying her teaching skills in an ID context and getting more comfortable with Storyline. Even though her upskilling journey wasn’t 100% complete, she decided to take the chance.

And spoiler alert: she got the job!

In this video, Scott Schmidt chats with Alyssa about how she overcame imposter syndrome and used a few key projects, along with her growing instructional design skills, to land the role.

Her story proves that you don’t always need years of experience to break into instructional design, you just need to show what you’re capable of!
