Mefenamic acid is a member of the anthranilic acid derivatives class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and is used to treat mild to moderate pain.
Mefenamic acid is used to relieve mild to moderate pain, including menstrual pain (pain that occurs before or during menstruation). Mefenamic acid is in a class of drugs called NSAIDs. It works by stopping the body from producing a substance that causes pain, fever, and inflammation.
Usually, you should expect to experience pain relief within the first two hours after taking mefenamic acid. If you're taking it for menstrual pain, it works faster and you don't need to take as much. longer than 2 to 3 days.
Mefenamic acid oral capsule is used for short-term treatment. If you're using it for mild to moderate pain, treatment usually lasts no more than seven days. If you use it for menstrual periods, the treatment usually lasts no more than two to three days.
Stomach upset, nausea, heartburn, dizziness, drowsiness, diarrhea, and headache may occur. If any of these side effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor or pharmacist right away.
Mefenamic acid can increase the amount of lithium in your body, which can be toxic. Your doctor may monitor for signs of lithium poisoning, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, or confusion. Mefenamic acid may increase the amount of methotrexate in your body, which may increase the side effects of methotrexate.
