Idea:
So many of my ideas for a business are immediately shot down in my own head with one thought, ”No one would ever pay for this. They could do it on their own.”

I want to bring up fresh dog food. This is, “chef” and “nutritionist” prepared food for your dog. There is no reason for this business to exist and yet it does.
Fresh Pet made $766.9 million.
The Farmer’s Dog made $800 million.
These two companies alone made over 1.5 billion dollars in 2023. Due to the time of this video I didn’t check 2024.

“The Farmer’s Dog” and “Fresh Pet” offer “fresh food” that is healthier for your dog than over cooked dry dog food. Both “fresh” options are shipped. “Fresh Pet” is sold in local grocery stores. Both need to be able to stay “fresh” during this transitional period. So are they really fresh?

My dog is supposed to eat 1 to 1.5 pounds of food per day.

Fresh Pet at a local grocery store costs $24.99 for 5.5 pounds of food. So the cost is $4.54 per pound.

The Farmer’s Dog is shipped directly. It costs $47.11 for the first box of 7 days of meals. Therefore, the cost is $6.73 per pound.

So, on the low end, The cost would be between $4.54 and $6.73 for prepared dog food. However, my dog doesn’t do well with chicken and “Fresh Pet” doesn’t have a non-chicken option. They seem to only offer multi-protein which includes chicken or chicken. So I can’t even include them in this for me, but we will keep it in. Just keep in mind that chicken is about ⅔ the cost of Turkey at my local store.

I am going to include a link to this spreadsheet that I have created so that anyone can check my work, but here you can see that I have broken down many of the components of what I cook for my dog at home with a few optional items. I then broke down the cost of each item down to the ounce and investigated how much of my dog’s serve size should be of each item. Then I calculated the cost of the serving size of each item per meal and projected the cost of all to per week, per month, and per year. Or more notably, from day to week (d * 7 = w), to year (w * 52 = y), and to month (y / 12 = m).

As you can see, the cost per ounce and therefore month, week, and year are almost double and each optional addition decreases the cost per ounce. The end result is clear. Cooking your dog’s food yourself costs less.

So it must be easier. Well setting up the subscription for “The Farmer’s Dog” is a bit annoying as they ask questions that don’t matter just to make it cute but serve no purpose. I will admit defeat as checking reviews for “The Farmer’s Dog” seem to be very positive. I don’t see an issue with subscription maintenance like Chewy or Amazon. So it seems that it is a little annoying to start up, but then easy to continue. I could see how this may be easier. However, reading a few articles, it seems that “The Farmer’s Dog” is only meat and vegetables. There is no grain included. So “The Farmer’s Dog” is not a complete meal. This changes the entire cost model. Roughly half of my dog’s meal is rice. If I were to calculate based on available resources, the cost will now have to double because the meal portion sold is for 7 days. My original calculations were based on the idea that this would be the full portion. Now it is only half.

“Fresh Pet” is sold in stores. There is no real additional effort other than your regular food purchasing. Go down the pet aisle and pick it up. Unfortunately, the cost would again double as “Fresh Pet” is also not the complete meal, but only half.

So while the effort is moderately higher to cook and refrigerate your pet’s food for the week. The cost is nearly 3 to 4 times the cost not to cook at home.

So let’s talk about how to prepare and see how much time it takes.
