This video discusses cold hardiness of a number of mulberry varieties under specific winter-time temperatures. Our farm is in zone 8a and experienced unique lows this winter that let us evaluate cold hardiness for our mulberry trees both in pots and in-ground.

SEVERE COLD WEATHER DAMAGE:
These mulberry varieties showed severe cold weather damage both in-ground and in-pot where all buds were killed and all above ground wood was discolored and dead:

MODERATE COLD WEATHER DAMAGE:
These mulberry varieties showed moderate cold weather damage both in-ground and in-pot where some buds survived and much of the above ground wood still has good color:

MILD COLD WEATHER DAMAGE:
And here are the pleasant surprises! Mulberry varieties both in-ground and in-pot that we thought would suffer in cold as low as 10F but actually did quite well with only some bud loss and slight discoloring.

Lopez Island is in the Maritime Pacific Northwest Zone 8A . Summertime temperatures rarely exceed 70F with occasional maximums in the 80s. Wintertime temperatures rarely go below 32F with occasional lows in the low 20s. Our farm is on a south facing slope at 220ft of elevation with unobstructed sunshine for the majority of the day.
