How to write effective dialogue | BFI Future Film Festival 2023 event

Tips and tricks on how to write the most significant portion of your screenplay: the dialogue.

Writing good dialogue should be easy but is often the trickiest aspect of any screenplay to get just right. In this masterclass, we will provide essential guidance to get your characters talking believably, and show you the red flags for re-drafting, so you can hone your dialogue and create dramatic tension and subtext by using visual storytelling.

Examples from dialogue-heavy and dialogue-free films will be used to explore how best to convey information on-screen, as well as demonstrate when your characters need to speak up, and sometimes more importantly, when they don’t need to say anything at all.

The BFI Future Film Festival is the UK’s largest festival for young, emerging filmmakers aged 16 to 25. The 16th edition of the festival runs from Thursday 16 to Sunday 19 February 2023.

The 2023 festival will take place both in-person and online creating a hybrid festival experience designed to reach as many attendees and viewers as possible from across the UK and throughout the world.
