1056 – After a sudden illness a few days previously, Byzantine Empress Theodora dies childless, thus ending the Macedonian dynasty, ruled the Byzantine Empire from 867 to 1056
1057 – Abdication of Byzantine Emperor Michael VI Bringas after just one year to become a monk. He retired to his private home and died there shortly thereafter.
1218 – Al-Kamil becomes sultan of the Ayyubid dynasty.
1314 – King Haakon V of Norway moves the capital from Bergen to Oslo. He began the construction of the Akershus Fortress, making it very clear that the king was to live in Oslo.
1422 – King Henry V of England dies of dysentery while in France. His son, Henry VI becomes King of England at the age of nine months.
1535 – Pope Paul III issued a sentence of excommunication against Henry VIII. This excommunication was then suspended, in the hope that Henry would toe the line, but his subsequent behaviour led to the Pope finally renewing the bull and excommunicating the king on 17th December 1538.

1751 - the English East India Company’s forces led by Robert Clive captured Arcot, the capital of the Nawab of Carnatic (Arcot), Chanda Sahib. This event changed the landscape of British and French colonialism in the subcontinent.
1778 - Chief Abraham Ninham and 17 Mohicans from Stockbridge, Massachusetts, were killed or captured by the British during revolution.
1795 - War of the First Coalition: The British capture Trincomalee (present-day Sri Lanka) from the Dutch in order to keep it out of French hands.
1798 - Irish Rebellion of 1798: Irish rebels, with French assistance, establish the short-lived Republic of Connacht.
1803 - Lewis and Clark start their expedition to the west by leaving Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at 11 in the morning to the Pacific Ocean.
1813 - At the final stage of the Peninsular War, British-Portuguese troops capture the town of Donostia (now San Sebastián), resulting in a rampage and eventual destruction of the town.
1829 - Rossini's last opera, the four-act Guillaume Tell, with a composite French libretto based on Schiller's play Wilhelm Tell, was produced at the Paris.
1836 - HMS Beagle anchors in Postage Praia, Cape Verde Islands. Charles Darwin was hired to be the ship's naturalist.
1843 - Liberty Party nominates James Birneyas, a Kentuckian and slaveholder as presidential candidate. Liberty Party collected 62,000 votes in 1844 election.
1864 - Atlanta Campaign - Battle of Jonesborogh Georgia, 1900 casualties. Confederate Lt. Gen. John B. Hood’s attack on Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman’s troops at Atlanta was repulsed with heavy losses.
1876 - Ottoman Sultan Murat V was deposed after he had reigned for only 93 days, on the grounds that he was mentally ill. The throne was succeeded by his brother Abd-ul-Hamid II.
1881 - The first US tennis championships, Newport, Rhode Island. Dick Sears emerged as the country's first champion, going on to win the first seven championships before retiring undefeated.
1886 - Crocker-Woolworth National Bank organized in San Francisco. It became a national bank in 1887.
1887 - Thomas A Edison receives a patent for his movie camera, the Kinetograph. Edison had developed the camera
1888 - Mary Ann Nichols is murdered. She is the first of Jack the Ripper's confirmed victims.
1894 - Phillies Billy Hamilton steals 7 bases, set the record for most stolen bases in one game in baseball history.
1895 - German Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin patents his Navigable Balloon (airship). It dominated long-distance flight until the 1930s.
1895 - John Kinport "Sal" Brallier was nationally acknowledged as the first openly paid professional football player when he was given $10 to play for the Latrobe Athletic Association for a game against the Jeanette Athletic Association in the United States.
