🦛 What Happens in a Hippo Pool
A hippo pool is the day-time social hub and refuge for a group of hippos, called a "pod" or "bloat," which can range from 10 to over 100 individuals.

Cooling and Protection: Hippos spend up to 16 hours a day submerged to keep their sensitive skin cool, moist, and protected from the harsh African sun. The water's buoyancy also supports their massive weight.

Social Dynamics: This is where all the noise and activity happens. They rest closely together, but dominant males are highly territorial, often displaying aggression like loud roaring/honking (the "noisy" part!), jaw-gaping, and splashy charges to defend their stretch of water and the females.

Biological Hotspot: Birth, mating, and even nursing a calf happen in the water. Critically, the hippos' massive amounts of dung create a unique, nutrient-rich, and microbial ecosystem that profoundly affects the river's water quality and the other creatures living in it.
