In this Video:
Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women. So, to protect yourself from breast cancer, self-examination should be an integral part of your life.
But how exactly do you conduct a self-examination?
You asked and Abudo answers
Here’s a self-breast exam that you should perform monthly.
Step 1: Start by looking at your breasts in the mirror by placing your shoulders straight and arms on your hips.
During examination check:
Whether breasts are their usual size, shape, and color or not
Or breasts are evenly shaped without any visible distortion or swelling
If you observe any of the following changes book an appointment with your doctor:
Dimpling, puckering or bulging of skin in the breast region
A nipple that has changed position or is inverted i.e. nipple is pushed inward instead of being outward
Redness, soreness, rash, or swelling
Step 2: Now raise your arms and look for the same changes.
Step 3: While looking at the mirror, look out for any fluid coming out of one or both nipples. The fluid could be watery, milky, yellowish, or blood.
Step 4: Now lay down and feel your breasts. Use your right hand to feel your left breast and left hand to feel your right breast. You should use a firm, smooth touch with the first few finger pads of your hand while keeping the fingers flat and together. Also, use the circular motion, about the size of a quarter.
Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side i.e. from your collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and then from your armpit to your cleavage.
It’s recommended that you follow a pattern to make sure that you have covered the entire breast. Here are two approaches that you can opt to examine your breasts.
The circular pattern approach
For example, you can begin your breast exam at the nipple, then extend the motion of your fingers to larger circles until you reach the outer edge of your breast.
Moreover, you can also move your fingers up and down vertically, in rows, as if you were mowing a lawn. This approach works best for many women.
While doing this make sure that you feel all the tissue from the front to the back of your breasts:
Apply light pressure for the skin and tissue just beneath the breast.
Apply medium pressure for the tissues in that lie in the middle of your breasts.
Apply firm pressure for the tissues that lie deep in the back. When you are able to feel your ribcage it means that you have reached the deep tissue.
Step 5:
Finally, feel your breasts when you are standing or sitting. Since many women find it easy to feel their breasts when their skin is wet and slippery, so it can be done in the shower. When you want to examine your breasts, use the same hand movements as discussed in step 4.
Now don’t wait and self examine your breasts before it is too late!
