The RMSTU campus is uniquely endowed with an existing secondary forest. The design capitalizes on this green asset by integrating its learning environments with biophilic indoor-outdoor tropical spaces. Central to the aims of the low carbon development is the preservation of Chittagong Hill Tracts’ indigenous plants and species and the creation of a vital new nature reserve. The concept derived from the rich diversity of ecology and ethnicity- Campus-In-A-Park, Preserve Ecology, Celebrate Ethnicity, Indigenous Building Techniques. To forge a “Campus Eco-Metropolis” identity, the academic blocks are organized as a chain of buildings, encompassing the central forest courtyard-transformed into an accessible community park. Instead of confining each program to its own individual building, the campus is based on a system that promotes maximum interaction. The building and the structural system takes into account the topographic challenges, slope failures due to excessive rainfall and the demand for consolidation of earth within and around the structural footings. The masterplan integrates-public plazas, pedestrian streets and the buildings-oriented to capture the prevailing winds from the lake on the east side and connecting visually with the natural reserve with every public space.
