Описание к видео How I learnt the Dutch language (0 to B2) in under 8 months🇳🇱

1. Investing time in understanding the grammar properly. This could be via a language school, taking the time to study the grammar books, etc. A lot of new Dutch learners make the mistake of minimising the importance of this step. Without understanding the grammar properly, you’re always going to have difficulties with expressing yourself confidently in the language. For me, I took language classes, 3 days a week, 4 hours per day. This was not as intensive as I wanted but it was what I could get at the moment and we made it work.

2. Finding/Creating spaces to expose yourself to the language and practise the language. For me, this meant reading the newspaper everyday (I was a newspaper delivery boy, so that was easier for me), watching the news every morning as well (even though I did not understand much), putting myself in social circles (basketball club) where the language was spoken a lot around me. This also forced me to try my best to speak as well. You can’t learn a language while staying in your comfort zone. You have to challenge yourself, it’s going to be difficult in the beginning but you will be proud you chose growth over comfort. I know I definitely am now.

3. Finding the right motivation to learn the language. This is last but definitely not the least. I’ve come to realise one of the main things holding people back from really investing in learning the language is the lack of motivation. In a country where most people speak English, I understand the temptation to neglect learning Dutch. However, I see a lot of people get frustrated they are not learning the language fast or efficient enough without realising that the motivation might be playing a crucial role. For me, I needed to pass my Dutch exam to be able to study medicine in the Netherlands. That really pushed me to study hard in order to make the deadline. Find something that challenges and motivates you and maybe give yourself some deadlines as well.

Hope these are helpful, but at the end of the day remember everyone’s journey is unique. It takes time, but one day you will be proud you chose growth over comfort🙌🏾
