Bengaluru: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has created history by breaking the long-standing record of former Chief Minister late D. Devaraj Urs, becoming the longest-serving Chief Minister of Karnataka in terms of total days in office.

Supporters of Siddaramaiah have begun preparations to celebrate this historic milestone. It is noteworthy that Devaraj Urs served as Chief Minister from 1972 to 1977, completing a full five-year term — the first leader in the state to do so — and later served for nearly two more years in his second term. His total tenure of over seven years (approximately 7 years and 239 days) had remained unbeaten for decades.

Since 1947, Karnataka has seen many Chief Ministers, most of whom served for relatively short periods. In terms of total tenure, Devaraj Urs had topped the list, followed by S. Nijalingappa, Ramakrishna Hegde, and B. S. Yediyurappa.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has served twice — his first term from 2013 to 2018, during which he completed a full five-year tenure, and his second term beginning in 2023, which is currently ongoing. As of 29 December 2025, Siddaramaiah’s cumulative tenure has officially surpassed the record of Devaraj Urs, placing him at the top of Karnataka’s political history.

Both Devaraj Urs and Siddaramaiah share the distinction of completing five continuous years in a single term, a rare achievement in the state where many Chief Ministers could not even complete one year in office.

Siddaramaiah is widely known for his secular ideology, consistently promoting religious harmony, social justice, and equality among all communities in Karnataka. His popularity among the masses stems from his pro-poor welfare policies, including schemes like Anna Bhagya and other social welfare initiatives that directly benefit marginalized and economically weaker sections. These policies have established him as a mass leader and one of the most influential political figures in Karnataka today.
