You may have heard of lasers, but what about their older brother - masers. Invented in the 1950s, masers use microwaves instead of light, but they were somewhat eclipsed by the much more practical laser. More than half a century later, researchers are demonstrating a new kind of maser, made using diamond. Nature reporter Elizabeth Gibney went to see it in action.
