3-IN-ONE Oil was created in 1894 by George W. Cole, who developed a formula that could perform three functions in a single application: lubricate, clean, and prevent rust. The product was originally formulated for use on bicycles.

History Overview
1894: George W. Cole, a resident of Asbury Park, New Jersey, invents the oil to clean, lubricate, and protect bicycles.
1899: Due to its immediate success, the business (G.W. Cole & Co.) is incorporated. Early packaging included small green glass bottles with a cork stopper.
1905-1910: The company name is changed to the "3-IN-ONE Oil Company".
1933-1936: The company undergoes several ownership changes, eventually being purchased by the A.S. Boyle Company, a subsidiary of American Home Products Corporation. Around this time, it began being sold in small tin cans.
1995: The WD-40 Company officially acquires the worldwide 3-IN-ONE Oil business from Reckitt & Coleman Plc.
1999: A new delivery system, the Telescoping Spout, is added to the product line.
Present Day: The brand continues under the WD-40 Company, with the original multi-purpose oil formula still available alongside specialty products like high-performance penetrating oil and white lithium grease.

The name "3-IN-ONE" was chosen because the product delivered three essential benefits with one application, quickly becoming a trusted household and professional maintenance solution.
