FC Barcelona was founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, Catalan, German, and English footballers led by Joan Gamper. The club has become a symbol of Catalan culture and Catalanism, hence the motto "Més que un club" ("More than a club"). FC Barcelona quickly emerged as one of the leading clubs in Spain, competing in the Campionat de Catalunya and the Copa del Rey. Barcelona played its home matches from 1922 to 1957 at Camp de Les Corts before moving to their current home stadium, Camp Nou, which was built in 1957. The game between FC Barcelona and Real Madrid is called El Clásico, and FC stands for Football Club. Their biggest rival is Real Madrid.
