The film tells the story of the August 2008 conflict between Russia and Georgia, the 2008 South Ossetian War was a war that took place in August 2008 on Georgian territory between the Georgian ZF on one side, and the unilaterally declared independent South Ossetia, and its supporters, Abkhazia and Russia, on the other. Beginning on August 1, Georgia and South Ossetia exchanged several firefights, and in the early morning hours of August 8, Georgia launched a full-scale military operation and quickly took control of more than two-thirds of South Ossetia, encircling its capital, Tskhinvali. Russian troops entered the South Ossetian region on August 8, quickly took control of Tskhinvali in a military operation on August 9, and occupied Georgian territories and military bases outside South Ossetia in the following days. With international mediation, Georgia and Russia signed ceasefire agreements on the 15th and 16th, respectively, and the war ended on the 18th when Russian troops began to withdraw from Georgia. The war resulted in 215 Georgian troops killed and 1,469 wounded; 74 Russian troops killed, 171 wounded and 19 missing, as well as some 1,600 South Ossetian civilians.
