Very often the perception of the Italian past abroad remains tied to imaginaries that arise more from tourism than from real historical knowledge and are propagated through products for the general public, such as movies, TV series, novels, video games. However, like all countries, Italian History is much more multifaceted and has interesting specificities. We will analyze some of them through the lens of Historical Reenactment, since in Italy it had a peculiar origin and development compared to the rest of Europe. This is due to the importance of historical festivals and palios in the first and second post-war period, the parallel path followed by reenactment groups, the link between reenactment and local communities and the growing importance of reenactment events in the tourist economy.

Igor Pizzirusso is a digital and public historian at the Ferruccio Parri National Institute, where he is also in charge of history didactics. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Public History Association (AIPH) and PopHistory ETS.

Jacopo Matricciani, aka Spadanera, has been involved in the reproduction of antique weapons for collectors, cinemas and museums located in different parts of the world for more than 10 years. In the last few years, he has become a prominent element in the Italian and international reenactment scene, participating and organizing several events with great success of the public. Characterized by its dissemination and involvement skills, it has organized experiential routes in order to make the most of the tangible and intangible heritage involved.

Licia Bianchi is PhD student in Early Modern History with a Digital Humanities project on Athanasius Kircher’s work (Roma Tre University). Co-curator of PH project CAMPIS, she is part of CISPH (Interuniversity Center for Research and Development of Public History) and member of AIPH (Italian Association of Public History).
