Ed Ames was playing Mingo, the Cherokee friend of Daniel Boone on that NBC series when he made this famous appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson the evening of 27 April 1965. For years the clip was a favorite of Carson’s and shown during his annual anniversary shows. The mishap was spoofed brilliantly on SCTV by Joe Flaherty as Sammy Maudlin, Eugene Levy as Lon Chaney, Jr. and John Candy as the unfortunate William B. Williams in “The Sammy Maudlin Show’s 23rd Anniversary” on 5 November 1982.
