This webinar – the third in our shock-responsive social protection series at socialprotection.org – shares case study findings from recently completed research in Pakistan and the Philippines. Both countries have been experimenting with building on their social protection system to provide effective disaster response, facing different challenges and opportunities that provide important lessons for countries in similar contexts. Specifically:

Our Pakistan presentation will highlight the significant national experience with cash-based responses to disasters, and focus in on the potential for leveraging some of the core systems and operational mechanisms of the country’s flagship social safety net – the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) - to contribute to shock-responsive social protection


Our Philippines presentation discusses experiences in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan in 2013, when WFP and UNICEF partnered with the government to provide top-up humanitarian cash assistance through the national Conditional Cash Transfer programme, the Pantawid Programme.
