Up at the very northern tip of Germany, on the Baltic island of Usedom, lies the old Nazi “vengeance weapons” (or Vergeltungswaffe) research station at Peenemünde. Now a museum consisting of the old Power Station (or Kraftwerke) and what is left of the first guided ballistic missile – the V2 (or more correctly the Aggregat-4 or A4). Designed by scientists Wernher von Braun and Walter Thiel, the A4 went on to kill thousands but was also the basis of man’s space exploration. Von Braun went on to develop the Saturn V rocket that took man to the moon in 1969.
