Leon Marchand won both the 200m butterfly and breaststroke in Olympic record time while Katie Ledecky defended her 1500m crown while also lowering the Olympic record mark in one her trademark events. A new world record for Pan Zhanle of the People's Republic of China, who swam to Olympic glory in the 100m freestyle with a time of 46.40 seconds.
