On Day 27, I decided to loot an elderly couple that is defenseless. I took the lesser route to provide more food for my survivors, and grab a very handy pistol (currently have a broken shotgun at the moment). The rock bottom route could have resulted in me killing the couple during the burglary, but I chose to leave them worse off than dead. After all, I have my family of 3 to support in this game, and we are drawing near 30 days.

Spoiler: ..........................................If you choose to rob this couple blind and leave barely anything, then your last visit will leave you feeling accomplished but dirty. The elderly couple will be found dead in their beds on the third floor. Again, tough call, but useful items.

This War of Mine: The Little Ones takes place in a broken down location, due to the result of war. The story takes begins with random survivors each time you start a new game (or you may pick your own survivors and unlock more as time goes on).
The main goal of the game is to take civilian survivors and maintain their basic needs of: hunger, shelter, health; overall well-being.

The daytime is better used as building, repairing, upgrading, cooking, and crafting weapons or useful items before nightfall. Due to snipers (may or may not be military) the survivors need to scavenge at night. During the day, cater to your characters needs and deal with visitors.

At night, choose wisely who scavenges, deep sleeps, rests, and stays on guard. Your shelter is fair game for any other scavenger that may come by in the middle of the night.
Building a bed, cooking station/stove, radio, and shovel are very useful in the beginning. The radio really comes in handy by offering advice from the military (or warnings), economy status, weather conditions, and the status on the current war.

Use your characters stats wisely. For example: See who is a good cook, use that to your advantage in the kitchen. See who can carry more items at night in their backpacks with more open slots. Is the survivor a sprinter? What kind of skill does each character possess? Will you have to turn on someone or attack a nearby camp to gain the advantage? Anyone handy with a gun?
