The City of Seattle has settled the wrongful death lawsuit for Jaahnavi Kandula more than three years after the 23-year-old was hit and killed by a police officer in a crosswalk.

"There’s a sense of relief," trial attorney Vonda Sargent, who represents Kandula's estate, told KOMO News. "We can now move on. There was absolutely no reason Jaahnavi should have been struck down."

Investigators said a now-former Seattle officer was speeding well over the limit when he hit the college student in a crosswalk at Dexter and Thomas Street in January 2023. Kevin Dave was reportedly driving 74 mph in a 25 mph zone when he struck Kandula at 63 mph.
